Lisa Shirah-Hiers holds a Master’s Degree in Music Composition from the University of Texas at Austin (1992) and a Bachelor’s in Theory/Composition from Lawrence University, Appleton, WI (summa cum laude 1988.) She maintains a full studio of beginning and intermediate piano, theory and composition students of all ages. Her students have received high rankings, honorable mentions and prizes in piano and composition by the Texas Federation of Music Clubs, the Austin District and Texas Music Teacher Associations, a performance by the Austin Symphony Orchestra on their annual Young Composers’ Concert in 2013 (Justine Maeurer’s Elements) and one student was a national finalist in the Music Teacher National Association Composition Contest.
Ms. Shirah-Hiers has composed and performed regularly at St. John's Episcopal Church where she sings in the choir and serves as occasional cantor.
Ms. Shirah-Hiers is a member of Phi Beta Kappa, Phi Kappa Phi, Sigma Alpha Iota ( a women's music fraternity), as well as the Music Teachers’ National Association (MTNA) http://www.mtna.org/, the Texas Music Teachers’ Association (TMTA), http://tmta.org/ and the Austin District Music Teachers’ Association (ADMTA) http://www.admta.org/wp/ where she has served as 1st Vice President, Fall Theory Chair and Founder/Chair of the Young Composer’s Concert. Ms. Shirah-Hiers was nominated for ADMTA "Teacher of the Year" in 2015 and 2016. She lives with her husband and daughter in Austin, TX.
